HOW TO PLAY BASEBALL POKER
Baseball poker is 7 card stud with all cards ranked 3 or 9 wild. A player who is dealt a 4 receives another card. If the 4 was dealt as an up card the additional card is dealt up. If the 4 was dealt down the player must reveal it but then gets their additional card dealt down. Optional Rules: 1. If a player is dealt the 3 of clubs or the 3 of spades as an up card that player is obligated to pay a fixed amount to the pot or else fold their hand. Suggested payment is 4 large bets. Black 3’s dealt as hole cards are exempt from this fee. The HPE home game utilizes this rule. 2. All wild cards that are dealt as an exposed card requires that player to pay into the pot or to fold. The payment should be a predetermined fixed amount. Suggested fee is 1or 2 big bets. By tradition the HPE home game does not utilize this option but is perfectly fine with it. |

The HPE home game prefers playing Baseball as a high-low split pot game. Playing high-low increases the number of playable hands.
With 8 wild cards the winning hands for Baseball poker usually must be excellent. For high, expect a high 4 of a kind to be the minimum needed to win. For low, the nuts or sometimes second best low hand. You’ll need to determine your own minimum winning hand standard in your particular game.
In an 8 handed game 24 cards will initially be dealt. That is nearly half the cards in the whole deck. You should expect that, on average, half of the wild cards will be in play right from the very start of each game.
It is an almost certainly that at the start of the game several wild cards will have been dealt to your opponents. If you do not have one you are at a disadvantage as it is more difficult for you to make a strong hand without a wild card compared to your opponent with one. Your chance of being dealt 1 wild card in your first 3 cards is pretty good, about 39%.
